Silver Sgian Dubh & Trainers of the Year

The Silver Sgian Dubh is awarded annual at the Winter SCOT Meeting. It is awarded to the Scottish Trainer of the Year. They are nominated by trainees throughout Scotland and there are regional “runners-up”.

Trainer 1 exemplifies excellence in orthopaedic surgeon training by consistently going above and beyond the call of duty. His dedication to fostering a supportive and dynamic learning environment is evident through his innovative teaching methods and unwavering commitment to his trainees’ success. Trainer 1 ensures that each trainee receives personalised instruction in theatre, tailoring his approach to meet their unique learning needs and styles. This individualised attention not only enhances the trainees’ technical skills but also boosts their confidence and professional growth.

Furthermore, Trainer 1‘s commitment extends beyond the classroom and operating room. He mentors his trainees, offering guidance and support for their career development. His open-door policy encourages trainees to seek advice and discuss challenges, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Trainer 1 frequently spends hours of his own time running through mock vivas for senior trainees in preparation for their FRCS part 2 examination. He always encourages the trainee to perform to the best of their ability and inspires confidence. Trainer 1’s dedication to his trainees’ success exemplify what it means to go above and beyond in orthopaedic surgeon training.
